Types of Web Hosting in 2026: A Complete Beginner’s Guide

Types of Web Hosting: What the Labels Actually Mean

A hosting comparison can put “cloud”, “WordPress” and “managed” in separate boxes even though one subscription can be all three. That makes buying a plan harder than it needs to be.

Hosting labels answer different questions. Some describe how computing resources are allocated. Others describe the infrastructure, the software or the work the provider handles. Start by separating those questions.

How are server resources allocated?

ModelWhat it usually meansWhat to check
Shared hostingSeveral customer accounts use a server environment maintained by the host.Account limits, isolation, supported software and what happens at the limit.
VPSA virtual server provides an allocated environment within a larger physical system.Memory, CPU allocation, storage, access and server-management duties.
Dedicated serverA physical server is allocated to a customer.Hardware specification, replacement arrangements and operating support.

These descriptions do not establish the performance of a particular plan. CPU contention, resource policy, storage and application configuration still matter. “Dedicated” also needs context: dedicated hardware and a dedicated virtual CPU allocation describe different things.

For a first website, our shared hosting guide explains the usual controls and restrictions. If you need a custom server environment, read the VPS guide before assuming that extra access will make maintenance easier.

Where does cloud hosting fit?

Cloud hosting describes an infrastructure and service model. A provider can supply virtual machines, managed applications, storage and other services from a cloud platform. A VPS can therefore run on cloud infrastructure.

The AWS introduction to cloud hosting explains the underlying model. In a buying decision, ask about the exact product: a single virtual machine, a managed website service and an application spread across several instances have different failure and billing behaviour.

A cloud label does not prove that your database has a working standby, that your application automatically scales or that failover needs no configuration. Ask the provider to describe what happens when an instance or storage component fails.

Managed hosting describes responsibility

Management is a service scope, not a separate kind of processor. You can buy managed shared hosting, a managed VPS or a managed dedicated server. The useful question is which jobs the contract includes.

Compare server updates, application updates, monitoring, backups, restores and incident support separately. A plan may maintain the server while leaving your WordPress plugins and custom code to you. “Fully managed” needs a task list.

WordPress hosting describes the intended application

A WordPress plan may offer installation tools, caching, staging and WordPress-specific support. It can use shared infrastructure or a more isolated environment. The label alone does not establish capacity.

Check the supported plugins, runtime versions, migration method and whether staging is included. For a store, test checkout and account pages rather than judging the plan only by a cached homepage.

Reseller and colocation describe different arrangements

With reseller hosting, you sell or administer hosting accounts under a supplier’s service. You may become the first support contact for your customers. It is an account and business arrangement that can sit on several infrastructure models.

With colocation, you place hardware you own in a data centre. Space, power, connectivity and optional assistance are purchased services. You still need a clear arrangement for operating and repairing the equipment.

Read a plan name as a starting point

Translate “managed cloud WordPress hosting” into three questions: what resources are supplied, what infrastructure runs them, and who maintains which parts? Then compare those answers with your workload and budget.

There is no universal progression that every website must follow from shared to VPS to cloud to dedicated hardware. Choose the arrangement you can operate reliably, then review it when measured needs change.
